Shooting at a photo meetup
November 23rd, 2009
This weekend I had the chance to attend a photo meetup (i.e., a group of people getting together to learn/shoot/mingle) sponsored by Pocket Wizard and hosted/emcee’d by pro photographer Mark Wallace. Lots of interesting discussion on studio strobes vs. small flash and how to use radio triggers…Mark was very good about staying neutral despite the sponsorship and talking about the good and bad, as well as how to manage some of the warts of the system. There were simple too many people at this meetup to do a lot of good shooting – probably about 75 showed up – but the talk Mark gave was great. Shootups are a very mixed bag – there’s almost always too much disparity in skill levels and experience to drive a cohesive experience, and they tend to teach to the lowest common denominator. Hey meetup organizers of the world, how about separating things into beginner and advanced?
I shot a few portraits but didn’t do a ton of work because it was too crowded to be enjoyable…here’s the best of the bunch.
