Alana – part 2
December 21st, 2009
I’ve been finishing up the edits on the shots from Golden Gardens over the last 2 weeks. Most of the editing was cleanup of people in the backgrounds, posts and sign removal, levels and color balance, those sorts of things. On a couple of shots I went more deeply into touchup of hair, makeup, etc., but I’m a photographer not a retoucher so I try to keep a light hand as it’s just not a skill I’ve put a lot into developing and don’t really want to.
Technical notes: on all of these shots I used either fill flash or a reflector to balance the strong sunlight; a big part of the challenge of the day was controlling the light with only a small flash (SB-900) and a small collapsible reflector. During the earlier part of the afternoon we shot in open shade to avoid the harsh direct sunlight; as the sun went dropped in the sky I opted to use it rather than fight it by putting Alana in front of the brick wall in the direct light and opening up the hard shadows with the flash. The added benefit of this was that the wall was warm and out of the wind which was a key part of managing the end of the shoot on a cold day.
